The victims must be unarmed ...

... it's so much easier for the authorities to clean up later.

The following is a comment to this opinion article by Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik:

I find it interesting that the arguments against allowing law abiding citizens to be armed are always hypotheticals-crossfire, cops not knowing who the bad guy is, confusion, etc. But the arguments for being armed are based on real life situations. A shooting in a Wendy's restaurant in West Palm Beach leaves one dead, an execution style robbery murder in Tinley Park, Ill., leaves 5 women dead, a shooting at NIU leaves 5 students dead, a shooting at Virgina Tech leaves 32 people dead, Columbine, a shopping mall shooting in Salt Lake City leaves 5 dead (would've been more except an off duty armed cop killed him), a shooting at a shopping mall in Omaha leaves 8 dead, a shooting at a church in Colorado Springs leaves 2 dead (would've been more but an armed security guard at the church killed him), the shooting at the Kirkwood, Mo.,City Hall near St. Louis leaves 6 dead, a shooting at a mall in Kansas City leaves 2 dead. And these are all just from the past year and don't those who were wounded! For reasons that they only know, law enforcement is at the forefront of keeping citizens unarmed and sitting ducks at malls, goverment buildings, and schools across the nation. If they want to keep us unarmed, then keep us safe. If you can't do that (which obviously is the case), leave those of us who want to defend ourselves alone.

The Tucson Citizen editorial board agrees that we should all be sitting ducks.

Now that the truth is out there, let the word go forth. Without conservatives there would be no torture. W's veto is complete, absolute and irrefutable proof of this simple fact. Only a conservative would think to change the definition of torture so that he can go on torturing.
We have been told "they hate us for our freedoms" and "they worship a culture of death." What we did not know was conservatives were talking about themselves. Every time W wants another one of our civil liberties it's conservatives who insist you won't miss that right, you don't need it anyway and besides, point to one person who has been hurt by the lack. When you consider that conservatives love torture and the death penalty the truth becomes clear. It is conservatives who have a culture of death. And it is conservatives who hate us for our freedoms.
