More Behind and above Roosevelt Lake ...

Click on images to view larger version of same.

More photos taken east of Roosevelt Lake. The first set is here. Roosevelt Lake is visible in three of these photos whereas in the last set only a sliver of the lake was visible in one of them. The last picture is a Photoshop composite. Photoshop really did a fine job. As you can see by the jagged edge the camera was hand held.

Behind and above Roosevelt Lake ...

These photos were taken east of Roosevelt Lake. There's an unimproved road --at times very rough, very narrow (specially on switch back curves) and with some steep grades-- that loops behind and above Roosevelt Lake.

Florence Junction ...

Clouds at Florence Junction.

Palm tree planted by the long forgotten?

But never fear, lest a nice little out of the way place to stop between Tucson and points North and East, the Phoenix instinct to cover the desert with cement is alive and well. Yes, I realize that there are many in Tucson who would like to catch up with the abomination that Phoenix has become. But Phoenix has a big head start and unless they stop growing, Tucson cannot catch up. Together though these forces will fill the corridor(s) between these two cities with ugliness.

This is the view in the opposite direction from the sign above.

Lucy and a few other photos ...

Except for the photo of Lucy with a green 'bone,' these photos were taken at the roadside rest area on I10 (heading toward Tucson, from Phx).

Been camping ...

I've been camping in the White Mountains -- north and west [CORRECTION: what am I thinking, the White Mountains are north and EAST] of Tucson. Sometimes one just finds the right spot at the right time and that was the case. I stayed until the holding tank indicated 'no more.'

Some photos, of course -- click on image for larger view.

This picture is at the top of the page (for today). It was taken from my campsite. If only I could move my house there. Sigh.

Just having some fun manipulation the image. I call it Lucy's Ghost.

This is the original image of Lucy's Ghost ... well almost. With digital cameras there's really no such thing as original. The only real question is how accurate the image, and even that is much in the eye of the beholder.

An old high school photo and a couple not so old ...

I've been 'rummaging' though old images, photos, scans and other stuff stored on CD's ...

This was one of my favorite pictures in high school, taken in 1957 at the base of the Spruce Mountain Lookout Tower (Prescott, Arizona).

And here's two photos taken in Sedona Arizona (from 2003) that caught my eye.

Sahuaros at the KOFA ...

February 2008, KOFA National Wildlife Refuge - photos of some sahuaros.

Click on image for larger version of photo.

From the Wikipedia:
The Saguaro, pronounced "sah-wah-roh", (Carnegiea gigantea) is a large, tree-sized cactus species in the monotypic genus Carnegiea. It is native to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona and California, United States and northern Mexico.

The common name of the cactus, saguaro, is a Spanish-language adaptation of a word used by a local aboriginal American nation, the Tohono O'odham, for the plant. Local English speakers pronounce it /səˈwɑɹo/.

Saguaros are slow growing, taking up to 75 years to develop a side arm. The arms themselves are grown to increase the plants reproductive capacity (more apices equal more flowers and fruit). The growth rate of saguaros is strongly dependent on local precipitation patterns ...

Underground abodes in the KOFA

February 2008, KOFA National Wildlife Refuge - photos of some underground abodes of small critters.

The third photo shows a large tunnel (in relation to the others which are quite small or become very narrow very close to the surface).

According to Mammals of Kofa NWR "The burrows are home to ground squirrels, pocket mice, and kangaroo rats." I wonder where the jackrabbits live?
