Apt characterization of Republicans ...

... and, sadly, of not a few Dems:
... [they denounce a judicial decision] for reasons having nothing to do with law and everything to do with their own political beliefs and outcome preferences -- i.e., they're advocating, as usual, for the consummate act of outcome-based "judicial activism" which they endlessly claim to oppose.

Obama was against Bush's attacks on the US Constitution and the rights of Americans before he was in favor of them. Or was it just that he wasn't the one ordering them in the first place? "... the complaint is that [US President Barack Obama, theoretically a Democrat] has actively and affirmatively embraced those very policies as his own -- the very policies which Democrats and liberals almost unanimously claimed for years they found so offensive and dangerous -- and he has vigorously defended them and repeatedly applied them in numerous circumstances."
" ... the U.S. government tortured an innocent man to extract false confessions and then threatened him until he obligingly repeated those lies as though they were the truth." A Truly Shocking Guantanamo Story: Judge Confirms That an Innocent Man Was Tortured to Make False Confessions by Andy Worthington, HuffingtonPost.com
Murder of the "not us" as policy. And Obama does nothing ... When Torture Kills: Ten Murders In US Prisons In Afghanistan
The Bush Torture regime continues its destructive force as Obama works to save torture for future presidents while, apparently, eschewing its use during his tenure ... This is a crucial and oft-overlooked fact in the debate over whether we should investigate and prosecute Bush crimes. The very same pundits and establishment journalists who today are demanding that we forget all about it, not look back, not hold anyone accountable, are the very same people who -- like Broder -- played key roles in hiding, enabling and defending these crimes. ... [...]
When poor and ordinary Americans who commit crimes are prosecuted and imprisoned, that is Justice.

When the same thing is done to Washington elites, that is Ugly Retribution.

The media and McCain ...
Foreign policy cred lets him get away with wild howlers on foreign policy. Fiscal integrity cred lets him get away with outlandishly irresponsible economic plans. Anti-lobbyist cred lets him get away with pandering to lobbyists. Campaign finance reform cred lets him get away with gaming the campaign finance system. Straight talking cred lets him get away with brutally slandering Mitt Romney in the closing days of the Republican primary. Maverick uprightness cred allows him to get away with begging for endorsements from extremist religious leaders like John Hagee. "Man of conviction" cred allows him to get away with transparent flip-flopping so egregious it would make any other politician a laughingstock. Anti-torture cred allows him to get away with supporting torture as long as only the CIA does it.
... the corporate media continues on its crusade of destruction.

How Republicans think, if one can call it that ...
To paraphrase: Per United States Attorney General Michael Mukasey, torturing Mukasey would be torture (to Mukasey) but not necessarily torture if Mukasey weren't Mukasey. Got that?

US/Bush torture policy gets clearer and clearer ...
Pertinent details: waterboarding is torture except when it's not, torture is illegal except when the Justice Department says it's not, the administration doesn't torture except when they do, and if anyone has a problem with that, the Justice Department investigate, except that they won't. Got that?

We do NOT torture ...
... "we start with the least harsh measures first" and stop the progression "if someone becomes cooperative." ... that is, Frances Fragos Townsend of Homeland Security is telling us that the US doesn't torture once those doing the torturing are satisfied with what the victim has said, what the victim has turned into, or that the victim is completely incapacitated or dead!

“Only equality [can] ensure freedom; only by guaranteeing a base level of equality [can] each individual be given the freedom to blossom—to pursue happiness.”
