Why does this story remind me of the Dubai Ports deal? It is almost as if Dubya and company know that there actually is no credible terrorist threat. How would they know that, I wonder?
It's a lot more fun to imagine that they are merely incompetent. They may be; or it may be that we underestimate their malevolence. Bush has always been portrayed as an underperformer, even by his own crew, even in the days before the 2000 election. The best reason to do that is to misdirect, to lead people to ascribe to ignorance and incompetence what rightly ought to be ascribed to malice.
You have a point although I do think the terrorist threat is real and they have made every effort (through incompetence or deliberate evil) to increase it.
No fly lists and the humiliating rituals the Bush Cabal has established in order to fly have nothing to do with terrorism. They are about control. They challenged the American people to stand up for themselves and the people looked the other way and accepted humiliation for the purpose of humiliation only. Control, malevolence and sadism?
I guess I've talked myself 'round to your point of view ... though ... it's difficult to get one's mind around the concept that they may not have wanted to do at least some things in a way that most people would consider right and 'competent.'
